Accessories Yamaha XJR1300

BIKE MagazineThese web pages are mentioned in BIKE Magazine issue #378 October 2004.

Before you read any of my comments about accessories that I have personally bought and tried let me just say that the XJR1300 is the best bike I have ever had and that no comments related to the accessories has change my opinion of this excellent muscle bike. However some of my thoughts on the Yamaha Official Accessories would not be fit to display. What I think of Yamaha UK for their silence would also be unprintable. From my experience I would say DO NOT BUY YAMAHA ACCESSORIES just buy the bike get anything else from 3rd party producers.

Lower down will be a wish list, some of the items I have seen fitted to other XJR's and have spoken to the owners.

Third Party Accessories for Yamaha XJR1300

Universal Oxford Luggage (YELLOW)

Sub Cowling (Black)

£ 269.99

Not recommended

Commonly known as a belly pan. Why I wanted a belly pan well, to justify having a bike I have to use it, travelling to and from work all year around. I hoped the belly pan would help to protect the engine during the winter.

I purchased a (2002) Yamaha Sub Cowling (Black) at an exorbitant cost of £269.99 expecting to be able to also fit the Yamaha Roller Protectors or crash mushrooms. By purchasing genuine Yamaha Accessories I expecting this to be achieved. The Yamaha dealer expected the same.

Problem one you can not fit Yamaha Roller Protectors with the (2002) Yamaha Sub Cowling the front cowling brackets stops thus from happening. Two not so much a problem but the cowling is in two parts which is held together two sets of nuts and bolts. Three Sub Cowling can bottom out over speed humps.

Adding some stickers made the belly pan look better on the bike but because of the cost and not being able to fit Roller Protectors or crash mushrooms without altering anything I can not recommend this product.

I still have the Sub Cowling as it was fitted for some weeks before the Yamaha Roller Protectors arrived. It was removed for the summer not sure what to do to make things better. Refitted for the 2003/4 winter.

I have seen a new version of the Sub Cowling from Yamaha fitted to an XJR. It looks as though it address all the problems I encountered. Although I am rather annoyed that I have never been offered this new version it looks as though the 2003 version should allow the Roller Protectors to fitted with this new Sub Cowling.

Roller Protector

£ 79.99

Not recommended if you have a Yamaha Sub Cowling.

These Roller Protectors were a good design as an individual item, they were also easy to fit. However they failed to fit correctly with the (2002) Yamaha Sub Cowling/belly pan. I had to get a refunded as I had already bought the belly pan a month or so before.

How they work is that the triangular shaped engine mounting brackets are replaced with sturdy polished aluminium blocks into which the Roller protector is bolted on to. Unlike other roller/mushroom protectors there is no need to replace the main engine bar that is located at the front of the engine which connects between the two triangular shaped engine mounting brackets.

Looking at other similar crash protection items they seam to be sold at the right price. The (2002) Sub Cowling and Roller Protectors could have some alterations to allow them to be fitted. The Roller Protector backing spacers could be milled to accommodate the Sub Cowling bracket or a new Sub Cowling brackets could be produced. However there is a new Yamaha Sub Cowling that looks as though the Roller Protectors can be fitted without any modifications.

Rear Fender (Black)

£ 142.99

Not recommended

The Yamaha Rear Fender or hugger rubs on the underside of the Battery compartment damaging it and the hugger. (Select on links to see pictures of the damage).

The damage happened after less than 3500 miles the rear suspension was up two notches so I could not see why it should have happened but it did. It has been suggested by readers that there may have been a problem with my suspension. I had no handling problems with the XJR but decided to have it looked at all the same. Nothing wrong was found so the damage is still a puzzle.

When you look at the cost of the hugger in comparison to other after market huggers I still would not have expected this to happen. I can not recommend this product. Refitted for the 2003/4 winter.

Engine Guards (Steel Chrome)

£ 44.99

Without Roller Protectors or a Sub Cowling they are easy to fit and look good, especially in conjunction with the polished steel Oil cooler . I hope that I never have to find out how good they are at Guarding the Engine in a spill. Anyone who likes chrome and do not want to fit Roller Protectors or a belly pan this is a must. Good price to. Mine will just be fitted for the summer months.View of Engine Guards (Steel Chrome). Have been removed for the 2003/4 winter.

MeteAlarm

£ 275.00

For insurance and a deterrent against theft an alarm system is a must. Yamaha Recommend MeteAlarm and the wiring is already in place and so is very easy to install. Sitting under the rear of the seat out of the way and not taking up much space. Seams to work OK I have not had the XJR stolen. Recommend.

Oil Cooler cover (Scorpion)

£ 60.00

Serves two purposes. Helps protects the oil cooler in the winter and second looks good. Very easy to fit easy to keep clean. However rattles a bit at low revs although I now tend to ignore that noise. Good View of Oil Cooler cover (Scorpion).

GIVI SML UNI Screen

£ 35.95

The brackets are a little small for XJR I hope that they will not move. Had trouble refitting the front of the head lamp once the screen was in place. The GIVI screen has a slight flick on the top edge this has helped at high speeds. I did try a smaller screen which was a little more expensive but I did not like it. It will most likely find its way on to my sons Bandit. The GIVI SML UNI Screen has now become a permanent fixture. View of the GIVI SML UNI Screen fitted on the XJR.

S/Rack Chrome (RENTEC)

£ 52.95

Wanted for the use of an Oxford Tail Bag. I thought it spoiled the look of the tail end of the XJR. Although it only takes a few minuets to take off or on I don't think it looks that bad and have decided to keep it fitted.

Some pictures of the rack on the XJR for you to select. Front side view, Rear side view. Full view of the XJR with the Chrome RENTEC S/Rack fitted.

Oxford Tank Bag

£ 60.00

The tank bag I have is the slightly older style. A small bag is at the bottom and a rucksack zips on the top. I use the bottom section every time I go to race meetings. Its surprising how much fits in it. The top is often filled with a helmet and wets for when I pick up my son from school.

Oxford Pannier Bags

£ 65.00

Only used once when we camped at Oulton Park. They held two sleeping bags in each plus some smaller items. Had no need to expanded the Pannier Bags to full size.

Oxford Tail Bag

£ 60.00

Have not used the tail bag yet but looks like a lot of volume when expanded.
